The Singer

Today while perusing the bookshelves of our modest library at the Bode, I came across a trilogy of books I recognized. While trying to place where I’d seen these books, I remembered I had seen them many times at the bookshelf in my living room at home in Huntsville. I had looked at the titles, but never opened the books. Today (while procrastinating on an essay about Job and suffering) curiosity overcame me and I pulled them down. I just finished reading The Singer, the first book of this trilogy written by Calvin Miller. These books are poetic narratives of the events of the gospels (The Singer), the book of Acts (The Song), and the events of Revelation (The Finale).

I have read many literary depictions of the gospel, but never before have I read something presented with so much beauty, song, and truth. Aside from the words of the Bible itself, this is such a beautiful retelling of Christ’s sacrifice for our world.

There is hardly any one part I can quote on its own because I can’t find a part that can stand on its own. All the parts of this narrative are needed to give the whole picture and depth of one man’s actions so many years ago. So essentially, I guess I’m telling you to read it for yourself. Joy and sorrow will strike your soul all at once as the reality of the gospel breaks upon you again like an ocean wave on the shore. You will be soaked.

Much love,
Mickeelie

  1. What's old is new again!
This amazing trilogy touched my heart deeply during my first year of university and still holds a place in the living room library.
Any Huntsvillian who wants to borrow a great read is welcome to borrow them! I may just pick them up again to be reminded of the most amazing song ever sung!
Thanks for reminding me of the smell of salty air, Mick!!
    Anticipating the wave,
